Kavya Shivashankar won the 2009 National Spelling Bee - Sunday, May 31, 2009 Kavya Shivashankar a 13 year old girl from Kansas won the 2009 National Spelling Bee.
She outlasted 11 finalists Thursday night to win the Scripps National Spelling Bee, taking home more than $40,000 in cash and prizes alongwith the huge champion’s trophy. Kavya enjoys practicing her violin, swimming, bicycling, and learning Indian classical dance.
The winning word was “Laodicean” which means lukewarm or indifferent in religion or politics.
Second place went to 12 year old Tim Ruiter of Centreville, Va. Aishwarya Pastapur, 13, from Springfield, Illinois, was third.
